The Best-Ever Book of Dog and Cat Names

Archive: Used Bookdealer

Just sold this to a woman in SF who needs it sent out priority mail. I wouldn't want to leave my pet unamed.

I called my first dog Dodo. Can't guess why my very young self named her after an extinct bird. Chester was the dog of my teens. I think I named him after a character on the old Gunsmoke TV show. Not liking the show I rarely watched it with my parents. I don't remember anything about the Chester character. But naming the dog wasn't a big struggle.

I lost two cats last year, Nodate and Crackpot. Nodate was named after a character in the Herbie comic, Nelly No Date. A heartless short feature about a homely woman whom no one would date. I had Nodate spayed first time she went into heat. It fit after a fashion.

Crackpot must've seemed like one to me. She was a bit paranoid, often seeing things that no one else did, so it always seemed apt.

When I next get a pet I'm probably fret a bit over the name. But something personal or pretty will come to mind. Whatever I choose will seem fine once its chosen.

I'd hate to feel so unsure of my own imagination that I'd need a book to name a cat or dog.
