Pay more for 'brand name' used books

Archive: Online bookselling

We just had our first ever Alibris sale that came from Amazon's Marketplace.

We mark everything up we sell via Alibris 20%. For Amazon sales Alibris adds a little extra.

They could've bought the book from us on Amazon for a few bucks less. Same description. Since Amazon's listings are sorted by price I suspect it might be Alibris' name recognition.

Years ago during Internet IPO mania Alibris got a huge infusion of cash that it spent on advertising. People buy books from them for the same reason they by Motrin instead of generic ibuprofen: branding.

Will As Seen on a Web Page fill the same purpose as the self-awarded accolade that the product is As Seen on TV?

Feel free to share your feelings about Pay more for 'brand name' used books. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted.

This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.

My thanks,
