Depends on knowing where to look

Archive: Online bookselling

I’ve been surprised by the overpriced books I’ve seen on ABE. Almost always recent scholarly books. Dealers will actually be asking more than list price for a book that can be bought new at a discount. Some are probably old line antiquarian dealers who specialized in helping wealthy people build personal libraries and got a premium for the service. The others are probably mostly ignorant people who got into bookselling strictly for the money.

Some books do bring more on ABE (as an example) than anywhere else. Well folks ask more and some people only search there.

Then there are the books that command inflated amounts on Amazon. Again, only because some people look for books on Amazon and nowhere else. I’ve sold a few ordinary paperbacks for $25 on Amazon’s marketplace that I couldn’t have gotten more than $3 for on ABE.

Feel free to share your feelings about Depends on knowing where to look. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted.

This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.

My thanks,
