India's Aghori Sadhus
Archive: Superstitious Folly
It is one of the most secretive tantrik sects of India and very little is known about them. And Zee News is planning a series of programmes on Aghori Sadhus, who reportedly resort to macabre rituals in their quest for ‘siddhi’.
The sect, which apparently has a membership of not more than 30 countrywide, reportedly eat human flesh taken out of bodies burning on pyres and resort to various other indescribable rituals. Some of these rituals have been caught on camera for the Zee News programme ‘Ek Shamshan, Teen Ratein’ to be telecast tomorrow and next Friday. …
The programme shows the strange ways these sadhus follow to attain ‘siddhi’: they live in cremation grounds, eat flesh out of dead bodies and indulge in rituals involving liquor, tantra and sex.

it was a home comming , but at the same time disgusting to watch a human practising cannibalism.
i had been told earlier that satan uses all tricks and practices which are forbidden by Allah, which include cannibalism, liquor, illicit sex, and devil worship.
in your programe you definitly showed copurage by exposing devil worship in the name of religion. i know a lot about Hinduism but nowhere it seems to be religious.
my faith in good deeds and practices has inceased. till now i thought devils existed only in fantasy, but now it lloks real.

I truly regret to have missed the program, but I recently had read a book an Aghoris and I found it full of surprises and I just enjoyed reading it. I gave me something new to think about as I was totally unaware of this practice to reach god, I used to believe there was only the conventional method to reach god, but when i read the book..i was absolutely enchanted by the practice and the kind of life aghoris live. I became interested in the practice from the day i read the book, I would like to meet a aghori in person , so that he can throw more light on the practices for me. Can someone help me please?

Beloved Friends,
I myself was unfortunate to have missed the program. Tantra is The Way to the Beloved Mother of Creation. During the dark ages tantra has been degenerated to illicit sex and drug abuse. But fear not my beloveds, Lord Shiva has taken human form to regenerate the lost science of tantra. Anyone interested in Aghora sadhana should go to a place called Kuch Bihar, Bengal. He has taken the name Sri Shankar Ray. He is building an asrama and temple for Maa Mahakali. See you there.

Well,
Whatever any one may say some things are beyond the reach of our limited capacity brain. The aghora tradition or tantra is the way to reach the highest truth, one of the wayts. To gain information the AGHORA I ,II , III BOOKS BY ROBERT E SVOBODA are very usefull. It is a method , a quick but crude method to self realisation or the aim of spirituality. God is every where, the universe is the body of God, God is even in the corpse.

Sir,
I am very happy to know about aghori Baba “Shri Shri 1008 Shri Bairagi Das”. Now he has taken “Samadhi” in my village- Bhueli. When I went to my village I know about this “Sampraday”.

The myth of the devil and of evil is imposed on us by our ignorance. The human mind is a great wonder and magician, it can assume the form of both a devil and a divine being any time it wishes. It can be a great enemy or a great friend, creating either hell or heaven for us.the unconscious mind has tendencies that must be drawn out and transcended before the previous poster jumps to a conclusion about calling Hinduism “devilish”…

There is nothing secretive about the aghora sect nor is there any form of tantrism. A-ghora means that which is not “ghora” or difficult, infact it is an easy path. From my contact with aghor sadhus, I have learnt that there is no sex involved nor do they dress in black. Infact they are clean shaven (scalp as well) and dress in white. They meditate upon Prakriti and as they progress they go beyond that to reach the Purusha from where Prakriti emanated. As such they reach the state beyond all creations. Anything else should not be polluted with the aghora name.

Aghori tradition cannot be claimed as Hindu. It is anti-vedic tradition of Angira school of spiritualists. Adinatha to Dattatreya…….. Ashtavakra to Janaka….. Balarama……. Sakyamuni to Maitreyanath/Subhutinath…….Nagarjuna to Nagabodhi………Swayambhunatha(Padmasambhawa/Guru Rinpoche) to Matsyendranath to Jalandharanath to Kanhanath…….Aghoribaba of Vakreshwara(Virbhum dist. West Bengal, India)to Tibbatinath(Chaktha Rinpoce),Baba Ramnath Aghori, Khyapa Nabanidas Baul and Kulavadhuta Satpunananda Avadhuta(myself). The tantrik texts, Bhutadamara and Hevajra of the Tantrik Buddhist lineage are the main texts of Aghori practices. I would love to correspond with you if you need. hi there
hapy new year to all
i am abhinav from india. delhi
i read robert e svoboda.. all three books and i am still 20 but something in me has changed drastically . my mother is a sanskrit teacher so now i keep on discussing with her she is a bit afraid. i am learning much on aghor vidya and soon i will be leaving everything for shiva my dad and tara my mom this is some thing to be experienced and felt this xperiance cannt be captured in words.words are too limited to capture god. the best places are in india.. kamakhya devi in assam and manikarnika cremation ground in benaras the biggest in india. and to become a true aghri u must have that courage to sacrifice your own head for an offring to please god. every body thinks that his watch is right but as a matter of fact not a singel watch is right. u see i wept a lot when i had a brk up with my girl friend but i wept for a girl who is not permanet and i wept buckets for a girl who has to die one day if i would have wept hand ful feeling bein seperated from god. i would had got god.. u have to cry from within for feeling being aseparated god is cool but he dosent want that any one should know about him he is a secret and when if god wishes and you start knowing a bit about god he will divert your mind to something mundane.. i know i have the courage to sit naked on a corpse and performe my jaap and siddhi but for that i need a perfect and true mentor and i am in search for him. i strive for the reality andi will get it.there is more to life then money,sex,relaxing,reputation,cars,luxury,bussiness,page3… and i want to see what that more is .so letz wait and watch
feel free to contact me
as for me i am abhinav in hansraj college final

Dear Sir
Your episodes are very intresting and having great informations of aghories sadhu.
Can you tell us —such type of spritual philosiphy of aghories sadhu is unlawful or having bad impact on society.
If this is agianst society then why police dont take action against them.
can you make one episode on which you can show——how police can take action against them.
regards

hi richard my only objection to the site or blog or website is that it mentions this page on a ” superstition ” heading whcih isnt fair man .
i have met some of theses saints and thier quest os for freedom and liberation ,they are quite sweet and likable human beings .these aghoris deserve some more respect man

Have been to india several times and have met a few aghoris, one, believe it or not, was an expatriated American whi indeed pollished and ate and drank from human skulls. For the most part the ones I met were quite gentle and authentic. Met some at the Ujjain Khumbha Mela of 2003. one I met in Varanassi however was quite agressive. A Phan wallah gave him a strong Phan in order to coax him away from me. he was attempting to take my camera after agreeing to a photo for ten rhupees baksheesh.
Quite interesting, but I donot agree with the first post that they are at all devils. From what i understand Hindu families on occasion request the presence and participation of aghoris at cremation rites, and hinduism certainly IS a valid religion. Tolerance folks!~

How on earth did all these credulous comments end up posted on a website hosted by an avowed skeptic and anti-theist and intended to forward that position? Don't you chaps and chapesses (the commenters) even notice what sites you're posting on?

No they don't.
When believers have conversations here I don't moderate them unless they become nasty.

I have seen that show and I think it was only hype. They did not show any magical powers possesed by an aghori though they talked about it a lot. Also the show was more of a busted balloon and nothing else as they failed to show how genuine they are.

all you honest searchers search for the cow that died cause of the plastic bag in its mouth at 12 00 midnight at godauli chowk kashi on the fullmoon of november. pull that plastic bag out, hold it towards mecca pray to any god and realize that the ricksha that hits your toe is the only truth that counts
Feel free to share your feelings about India's Aghori Sadhus. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted.
This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
