MINNEAPOLIS - A student Christian group sued the University of Minnesota on Friday on claims its religious freedom is being violated by the school's requirement that it abide by campus equal opportunity rules.
The group requires its officers and members be Christians who live according to what it considers Biblical tenets. Among other things, the group prohibits sexual activity outside marriage, including homosexuality. Lorence said that puts the group in conflict with the university's requirement that student groups be open to all students regardless of religion, marital status or sexual orientation.

This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.

Without reading the article, I think I would side with the student group on this one. I don't have a problem with a group of people with common interests choosing to get together and setting standards of behavior that signify their membership. I wouldn't expect a vegan group to welcome someone to their dinners who insisted on bringing a plate of barbecued ribs to eat.
There needs to be a middle ground where we tolerate the groups around us but are free to choose who to associate with. Tolerance of intolerance is difficult but in some circumstances it's necessary to preserve everyone's freedom.
