Michael Newdow is a passionate atheist

Skeptics & Atheists

He filed a lawsuit to have "under God" removed from the Pledge of Allegiance and wants "In God We Trust" taken off coins and currency. He has even recorded a CD of atheist folk songs.

In the song Old Religion Blues, he offers a sarcastic view of people who want God in the Pledge:

"They ran it through the Congress, each colleague gave a nod," he sings. "Well damn the Constitution! This country needs some God!"

As an atheist conservative I have only respect for Mr. Newdow. It takes great courage to pursue a correct course in the face of contrary opposition by religious and political leaders. While I admire past President Eisenhower for several reasons, his religious views are not compelling. I was brainwashed as a child in school and so were many millions more. It is wrong and immoral. I am struck by the phoniness of religion and its claims to legitimacy.
I am extremly glad that someone is taking legal aciton. I'm a high school student, so I have to deal with the Pledge situation, and as I go to a school that is literally over 95% rich white Christians, it leads to more problems. God I hate the suburbs. But the whole situation is just so... wrong. If we took the time to honor everyone's religious beliefs we would do nothing else. Bloody evagilists.
I am 73 years old. I want to thank you for being a part of waking me up. I have either been sleep or dead for following things I really did not understand. Now I seem desperate to try to find places to take my feet that will keep me from more igorance Thanks Again
out of all the religions in the world, i hate christians the most because they believe that it is their job to convert EVERYBODY! what the hell is up with that?
Michael what do you believe in? Marriage? The rights of the majority? How about the rights of your daughter? To hell with everything and everyone as long as I get my way. I just love people that so haphazardly discount all that came before them. Were our ancestors so stupid as to need correcting by the likes of you. A guy like you that can't even keep his own marriage in tact is setting policy for all of our children to come. Why don't I feel comfortable with this?
Atheist are proven wrong everyday. Of course you were created with the big bang theory. Just wish the 2 who hatched you would have used birth control.
Good for him. Next... swearing to tell the truth with one hand on the bible.
Wonderful to see such warm displays of Christian love.
Dear Christians, The removal of a reference to a deity will not impact you or your faith. Please relax and focus on brotherly love, as your leading prophet advocated. Love, Holyfield
hurrah for michael newdow.i am not just an atheist iam rabidly atheistic. i see all religion as evil.the church no matter what its brand name might be should be taxed to the point where it bleeds.
To Majority, and Ed: (and those who feel like them) Most atheists beleive in many things, I, as an atheist, believe in life, love, family, friends, people, respect, honor, truth, responsibility and integrity, and justice, for starters. As for being "proved wrong daily", I act responsibly. I am raising a family, paying a mortgage, and taxes and bills. I worked my way through a college education. I work, and support my family, and donate both time and money to those in need. I get involved with my local causes, both social and political. What about my life has been proven "wrong"? The simplest way to view the Pledge of alegience and how it should be, is that it should apply to all citizens of America, not just those who believe in a god. Removing the phrase "under god" does not make it an atheist pledge, it makes it a neutral pledge, that can apply to all of our people, and not just those who believe in a god. Then it truly becomes a patriotic phrase, not a religious one. I greatly admire and appreciate Michael Newdow's efforts on behalf of non-believers in America. Thank you Michael. Good-on-ya. #:) AAU
It is good to have some atheists posting on Gullibility instead of the born again and new agers.
Michael Newdow should not be forcing atheism on my children who also attend public school. An atheist named Madeline Murray O'Hare took the lords prayer out of school and now Michael Newdow wants to remove patriotism as well. If Michael Newdow is so disenchanted here, perhaps he'd be interested in moving to Russia.
More likely a nice secular country like Holland.
As a citizen of Israel, I will not be affected at all by the Supreme Court's decision concerning Dr. Newdow's case. However, as a rabid atheist, living in a country where absolutely no wall separating church and state exists at all, neither de jure nor de facto, and where every aspect of my life is dictated by 2000 year-old religious laws, I cannot but applaud his courageous stand. What has God to do with my life, for better or worse? Should I thank Him for the present miserable state of the planet? For Auschwitz? For my mother's early death of cancer? Those who want to worship are welcome to do so, but please do not force your beliefs on your rational, free-thinking non-believing fellow citizens. The exclamation "oh God!" should be reserved to the church, the synagogue, the mosque, or the bedroom, where it belongs.
When I was in high school, I was forced every year to fill in the space for religion when registering for school. I left it blank one time and was called to the office. They insisted that I put in something. Each year thereafter I put in a different religion. It seems we have freedom of religion but do not have freedom of no religion. In addition I watched the discomfort of the jewish students when we all had to recite the lords prayer.
Dr. Michael Newdow has undoubtedly lost a number of his dental customers. I am a rationalist and would like to make Dr. Newdow my dentist. Is this possible under the circumstances? Manion PS: I had recently become an agnostic when President Eisenhower had "under God" added to the Pledge of Allegiance. I thought it unreasonable then, and still do. Being open "minded" I am only an atheist to the logical probability of 99.9999 percent.
This country was also founded on slavery and racism but we evolved past that. God only comes into play when we talk about things we don't undersand. When this country formed we did not understand many things. now we do so god is not invoked into matters as much. It's time we remove "under God" and have a pledge that represents all Americans.
I am an agnostic at best, an atheist most of the time. But my religious beliefs, or lack thereof, have nothing to do with my passion for separation of church and state. Michael Newdow did all of us a favor. He tried to maintain the separation of church and state by having "under God" removed from the pledge. I remember when the change was made. I was in grade school. I refused to say the words "under God" when I recited the pledge. When the government stops collecting taxes from atheists and agnostics, the religious zealots in this country may have their references to God in everything. As long as I have to pay taxes, I will fight for separation of church and state, and for the omission of any and all references to god at public events, prayer in school and so forth. Michael Newdow, you are my hero!! And so is your daughter. Neschie
Mr. Newdow, If you truly believe in the separation of Church and State and your crusade to 'restore' the Pledge of Allegiance, you should give away all your money and never accept, spend, or even possess any U.S. currency that says "In God We Trust" because you can't have it both ways. You should sue the U.S. Treasury, and refuse to pay any taxes. Simply explain to the IRS that U.S. currency is unconstitutional and therefore has no value, hence you owe no taxes. Perhaps the Supreme Court would be more accomodating if, rather than petitioning to remove the words "Under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance you offer a reasonable substitute. I suggest 'One Nation, under Canada'. Another alternative would be for you to simply move to another country where you would not feel so oppressed. But before anything else, you MUST get rid of all your God-labeled money. You can send it to me, I'll dispose of it for you. Just email me for instructions. I prefer PayPal. Thanks! Sincerely, A Concerned Citizen
Hey wheres my dissenting opinion? Edited since Im not a good little usefull idiot? Wasn't proGay enough? Sheesh. My cousins gay, Do I need to pen under his name to be heard. Apparently college, the newsmedia and now internet sites? Man i guess Im just not politically correct enough to be a good little sheep. Lame!!!! /endSarcasm
I bet you were the guy who said that he hoped Michael Newdow would develop colon cancer.
Yeah Maybe the name gave it away too. There are so many fundamental problems with this issue. In essence this is just another attack on an issue that does not directly affect our daily lives. I don't see any of these solidarity hand holding well wishing events for the millions of Americans stuck in traffic unecessarily polutting the environemt. Apparently, something that happened to you guys for a measley 1 minute a day 30 years ago is more important. Don't even get me started here. This is just another example of being jerks because life isnt turning out as it was promised to you when you wer growing up. Here's some shocking news folks. Life is hard it's not fair at times. People offend others and your feelings are going to get hurt. There is no such thing as a "feel good" life. Grow some sack and re-direct your efforts for the better of mankind. This is not accomplished by chipping away at society day by day. And yes I hope that A-hole gets every disease known to man. I really despise him and what he stands for. He betrayed his own daughter in order to feed his own Monkey. He is a world class A-hole and you guys are guilty for follwing his crap.
Actually I don't care about the pledge business. I think fighting with fundamentalists about symbols is either pointless or antagonizing them over trivialties. Not that it annoys me. I'm more concerned about things like adequate science education and the removal of certain laws rooted in religious superstition. Some atheists feel strongly about removing symbolic artifacts. I suspect that most of them are as mature or immature as most citizens.
Why doesn't Michael Newdrown take a nice little trip to Iraq or Iran and try to tell the mullahs that their governments are wrong to enforce the will of Allah. If he managed to escape, I think he would be greatful to live in the United States. It's okay if he doesn't believe in God---that is his right. But it is immoral to try to force his opinion as the only right one on everyone else throught costly lawsuits, because he doesn't get his way. I hope his daughter will disown him. Finally, whiners like Michael should be shipped off to Canada. Getting rid of obnoxious people like him would save the taxpayers plenty of money and grief.
Michael, Why are you doing this? Think about it. You are devoting your life to the advancement of atheism, which is an unfortunate state of denial, the essence of emptiness. What a waste! As an advocate of emptiness, even if you were correct, it seems to me that you are wasting your life on something that is intrinsically unimportant and not life-giving. Why bother? According to your belief, your life will be over in a few years and there will be nothing left. Why not use the time you have left for something productive and fulfilling? What could possibly be fulfilling about devoting your life to denial? I have seen pictures of you in a number of places and you don't look like a happy person. I feel bad for you.
Michael, I feel sorry for you. You are such a waste in a society. What a shame. But, I still do hope you will find true happiness ,peace and comfort under His care.

How do you feel?
