Devilish Mount Diablo

What can you say?

Art Mijares of Oakley CA has asked U.S. Board on Geographic Names to change the name of Mount Diablo. Evidently the poor critter thinks the mountain got its name through devil worship. Funny how no one else caught on to that over the last 165 years.Sometimes Christians are even dopier than you expect.

"Words have power, and when you start mentioning words that come from the dark side, evil thrives," Mijares told the Contra Costa Times. "When I take boys camping on the mountain, I don't even like to say its name. I have to explain what the name means. Why should we have a main feature of our community that celebrates the devil?"

I got a much better idea. Why not go straight to the source of the problem and ask the U.S. Board on English Words to remove any evil words from the language? This way we'll never have to worry again about causing evil to thrive.
I wouldn't be surprised is some Christian group doesn't try something that nutty one day.
I am shocked and horrified that some "God-fearing Christians" are going after Mt. Diablo. If they only went to that mountain, they would find peace and solace, and could even find beauty that they could use as proof their god existed. I think Mr. Mijares first needs to change the name of the Lamborghini car, then ask the Charlie Daniels Band to change the name of their song from "Caballo Diablo", then go after Tempe Diablo Stadium in Arizona, then nail that video game by the same name, then really vehementy pursue changing Diablo CA 94528, only after having the Mexican government change or even completely destroy El Picacho del Diablo, the highest point in Baja, Mexico. Absolutely ridiculous. This pursuit to rid the world of a beautiful mountain's name will never get off the ground. Mr. Mijares an his followers should just schedule a hike on this beautiful mountain and get some fresh mountain air. The he may be able to think *clearly* and ponder if he should really pursue such an embarrassing move.
Follow up: In today's issue of Brentwood's "Good News", our local Christian newspaper, there is a huge article stating the immediate reason to change the name of the mountain. On the same page, however, they have a large ad for Diablo Funding Group, and on a previous page they have an ad for Diablo View Florist. Renaming the mountain will break the "stronghold" that Satan has on Contra Costa County. Seems Satan has a chokehold on our local Christian newspaper. Hypocrites? Hilarious as hell, that's for sure.
Local Christian newspaper? Surprisingly we don't seem to have any here in North Carolina.
Below is an e-mail that I sent to the publishers of the "Good News" christian pubication. To The Publishers of Good News: This is in response to the article your publication printed titled "Renaming Devil Mountain" in your May issue Vol.2 Iss.5. I would first like to say that if Mr. Mijares truly feels that changing the name of a landmark just because it has the word Diablo or Devil in it, then he truly has his work cut out for him. Just to help him along in his crusade, I've included the names and locations of some of these "evil" places where Satan must often go hiking, camping, biking and skiing. Go figure! who knew Lucifer was such an avid outdoorsman! Anyway, here's my list for you to pass on to Mr. Mijares. 1. Devil's Backbone Park - Illinois 2. Devil's Gate - Wyoming 3. Devil's Tower - Wyoming 4. Dirty Devil River - Utah 5. The Devil's Highway - Arizona 6. Kill Devil Hills - Virginia 7. The Devil's Backbone - W. Virginia 8. Devil's Lake State Park - Wisconsin 9. Devil's Chair - Minnesota 10. Devil's Millhopper State Park - Florida 11. Devil's Postpile - California 12. Devil's Hopyard State Park - Connecticut 13. Devil's Thumb - Colorado 14. Devil's Hole State Park - New York 15. Devil's Den - Florida 16. Devil's Stairsteps - Colorado 17. Devil's Head Resort - Wisconsin 18. Devil's Glen - Canada 19. Devil's Elbow - Canada 20. Devil's Dyke - England 21. Devil's bridge - Armenia (an evil bridge?) Last but not least, let us not forget about the Bermuda Triangle A.K.A. The Devil's Triangle. Oh and by the way, I really like the add for Diablo View Florist on page 8 section B of your publication. Just imagine, if Art Mijares gets his way, they would have to change the name of their business! Oh well, I'm sure they wouldn't mind as long as it was for the greater good of humanity. Anyway, what's in a name? P.S. At least the publishers of Good News don't mind the word Diablo. That is as long as there are advertising dollar$ attached to it.
Let us know what they have to say. If they say anything.
Victory!! "On Wednesday, October 12, 2005, the U.S. Board on Geographic Names voted to retain the geographic name Mount Diablo for a summit in Contra Costa County, California. A motion was made and seconded not to approve the proposed changes, specifically to either Mount Miwok, Mount Ohlone, or Mount Yahweh, citing the negative recommendations of many local residents, numerous local and regional organizations, the Contra Costa County Board of Supervisors, and the California Advisory Committee on Geographic Names. The members also cited a lack of evidence that the existing name is derogatory as well as a reluctance to change a name in long-standing and widespread verbal and published usage. "

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Devilish Mount Diablo. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
