King James Bible Textbook Initiative
• Wearisome Bedfellows
American AtheistsAmerican Atheists announced today its opposition to the proposed California initiative that would amend the state constitution to mandate using the King James version of the Bible as a textbook in public primary and secondary schools. (SA03RF0054, Amdt. #1-NS)
“This is nothing but an attempt to bring the Protestant Christian religion into the public schools” declared Dave Kong, California director for American Atheists. “The initiative’s proponents talk of ‘broadening the education of the mind,’ but the first statement on their website clearly reveals their intention: ‘This initiative will make the State of California provide the students in the public schools with Bibles.’ “
