UFOs & Bogus Science

Did they 'claim' that or is that sensationalist reporting?

Scientists from SETI, the worldwide project for Search for Extra-Terrestrial Intelligence claim to have detected what they believe to be the first radio signal from an alien civilisation.

Alien Jadoo comes calling

You know, long, long ago before Sagan had to start talking about "billions and billions" on TV (back then he was known only as the translator of a Russian science book) I wondered if I might

be interested in xenobiology. Only briefly, back then my heart belongs to particle physics. Well, that was me at 15 anyway.

SHGb02+141 is coming from a part of space where there is no obvious star or planetary system. Its frequency is 1,420 megahertz, one of the main frequencies of hydrogen when it absorbs and emits energy. Some space scientists have argued that an alien civilization trying to broadcast its presence would transmit at this frequency. "It just boggles my mind," said University of California Berkeley's Eric Korpela.

Is there anybody out there?

Hope springs eternal and an advanced education in science doesn't stop that anymore than it prevents some from becoming creation 'scientists.'

Sensationalist Reporting

According to Dan Werthimer, who heads up the UC Berkeley SERENDIP SETI project, this is a case of a reporter failing to understand the workings of their search. He says that misquotes and statements taken out of context give the impression that his team is exceptionally impressed with one of the many candidate signals, SHGb02+14a, uncovered using the popular SETI@home software. They are not.

um, i downloaded this signal from the seti website, and i dont believe either that could have been the result of a physical interaction with hydrogen. but i wonder if a tribe of geeks at the SETI analyzed what contains the original signal ( data carrier, analogue or digital, if it has a sync or not. ) i hope they'll keep up the good work.

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about SHGb02+141. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
