A Kumari's life

Asian , • Superstitious Folly

Life as a living goddess - a Kumari - doesn't sound all that great. You spend your childhood under what is little more than house arrest. Every so often you are pulled through the streets on a chariot.

When puberty hits your divinity vanishes (menstrual blood rendering holiness impossible) and you are dumped back with a family you don't know and expected to start learning how to live as an ordinary person.

Each Kumari is chosen aged only three or four, always from the same Buddhist clan, and has to have 32 attributes, including thighs like those of a deer and a neck like a conch shell.
