Freethinkers : A History of American Secularism

Skeptics & Atheists

Publisher's blurb:

In impassioned, elegant prose, celebrated author Susan Jacoby paints a striking portrait of more than two hundred years of secularist activism, beginning with the fierce debate over the omission of God from the Constitution. Moving from nineteenth-century abolitionism and suffragism through the twentieth century’s civil liberties, civil rights, and feminist movements, Freethinkers illuminates the neglected accomplishments of secularists who, allied with liberal and tolerant religious believers, have stood at the forefront of the battle for reforms opposed by reactionary forces in the past and today.

Dear Madam, As you have guessed, I have seen you on TV or heard you on the radio, or read your work. As you also have guessed by now, I have to respectfully disagree with your positions on both your faith in Jehovah and your politcal view. I have two questions which I am sure you have heard before; but I find them helpful anyway. The first is for your faith, if there is not one single creating being that authored the universe and guides it, please explain how it is that our earth is in such an orbit that fewer than 3 degrees of pitch in the wrong direction and life on this planet would not be possible? is this some sort of accident, and if so how is it that Carl Sagan ( a noted atheistic scientist ) admits that it is mathematically impossible for the univers' design to be by anything other than a purposeful plan and divine order? My second question is for your politics. If we are a secularist nation, as you claim, why would the founders have ever bothered to mention a "Creator" in the Declaration of Independence and many scores of Federalist Papers following? If they were solely secularists as you claim, then that would be a huge oversight; would it not? thank you for your time.

How do you feel?
