Can you be a good scientist and believe in God?

Skeptics & Atheists

Herbert A. Hauptman says it all for me:

Belief in the supernatural, especially belief in God, is not only incompatible with good science, Dr. Hauptman declared, "this kind of belief is damaging to the well-being of the human race."

Scientists Speak Up on Mix of God and Science

Through compartmentalization, a good scientist can be a Christian, nazi, or whatever else in his/her personal life. Is religion a destructive force that must be abolished to improve the world? Certainly, but a scientist at work cannot be expected to be a scientist 100% of the time in his/her personal life.
Sure, faith doesn't interfere with the practice of science except when faith causes a person to ignore or distort evidence.
Funny I thought Einstein was trying to uncover how it was that God Built the universe.
Science is the study of the physical world and the patterns tha occur within natural processes. How does a belief in God interfere with that? None of the quotes or comments above give a reason why they would be incompatible. How can Dr. Hauptman claim that such a belief is "damaging to the human race"? Certainly there is evidence that religious organizations have caused historical damage but there is also equally valid historical evidence that such institutions provide the stability and impetus to study the world as science does. I is not belief in God that causes the problem.
Absolutely, not that I believe in him or anything. That doesn't mean Intelligent Design makes any sence, though. ID isn't science. On the other hand, real science doesn't disprove the existance of God, so whose complaining?
Am I missing something?: try reading an Albert Einstein biography. "It was, of course, a lie what you read about my religious convictions, a lie which is being systematically repeated. I do not believe in a personal God and I have never denied this but have expressed it clearly. If something is in me which can be called religious then it is the unbounded admiration for the structure of the world so far as our science can reveal it." -Albert Einstein (from Albert Einstein: The Human Side, edited by Helen Dukas and Banesh Hoffman, Princeton University Press)
