Brights' Rights?
• Skeptic & Atheist Websites, Weblogs
I ran across the American Humanist Association' BrightsRights.org by accident. The goals include:
- Raising public consciousness and public appreciation of bright contributions to society.
- Highlighting the advantages of the this-worldly bright perspective.
- Refusing to equate in-group appreciation with out-group disrespect, thus deflecting charges of bright arrogance.
I don't know some of that sounds mighty other-wordly to me.
- Countering existing barriers to equal treatment of brights.
- Preventing further legislative, commercial, and social denigration of brights.
- Including brights in public life, in language, and in practice.
Essentially: atheists' rights. (Although the last item I can hardly parse.) I wish they'd be more specific about the discrimination they plan to fight. Since they are on my side I'll wish them well. Atheist and agnostics don't all share the same politics. As individuals they range from hard-line objectivists to kindly do-gooders. I expect increased political involvement will lead to fragmentation. But there's always the ACLU.
