WOAH, RICH!!
What the f? I thought we were cool after you made fun of me that one time and I said you were right. You talkin censorship like it's no thang? I'm startin to git skeptical...

A comment left by 'Gitcha' who has lately been a frequent comment leaver on Gullibility isn't in the dictionary. I'd written this:

Sadly this weblog mostly attracts Fundamentalists and new agers. Intellectually equivalent pests, although the latter are harmless.

Perhaps I should turn the commenting system off or fix things that comments won't appear without my approval.

This is the weblog of someone who is an atheist, skeptic, materialist. In the spirit of H.L. Mencken's old Americana column in the original American Mercury I use it to document the often laughable, sometimes sad conceptual naiveté, intellectual vacuity exhibited by most of mankind. But that sounds too sober. I've come to note more substantive works than I'd originally intended. But the weblog is mostly a freak show of clownish delusions.

I'd hoped to see comments from similarly amused and annoyed folks. But I'd rather have silence than the steady drip, drip, drip of the born-again and flying saucer fans.

When Gitcha made his first small barrage of posts I thought he was spamming me. Then I realized he was on a lark. Seemed like a good idea to ignore his sloppy entries. He didn't mean ill. And, gay man that I am, the trash talk to females who've commented doesn't really tickle me. They get more than enough of that from straight men in meat life.

The notes from fundies are too wearisome to be funny. I've limited myself to deleting homophobic crap so far.

Censorship? This is a personal weblog, a hobby, an entertainment. I'm under no obligation to be open to all voices. I certainly don't feel like being open-minded. My opinions of addlepated supernatural explanations are to me nothing but proof that most people are too weak to live in an indifferent universe.

Adam Kalsey's observation about comment spam drawing more comment spam may apply to most any type of comment. Gresham's Law applies as well.

I'm not planning on employing it yet but comment approval will most likely come. I'm sure it'll become the norm for weblogs lest we find our comments following usenet to hell.

People who are offended can start their own weblog. Hell, I've still got a bunch of free Live Journal codes to give away.

My policy is that evangelical nonsense is an attempt to obtain free advertising at my expense and is therefore deleted. For particularly silly examples, I have taken an idea from Teresa Nielsen Hayden (http://www.nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/) and simply remove all the vowels, which is strangely satisfying.

Rich: sometimes I feel you don't git me at all. "Sloppy entries?" bull-to-tha-shizzle! I'm always on point, chica. You made this little post to defend talkin trash about turning off the comments to hide from me. But neither you, nor anybody else, can ever seem to step to the question I feel like I'm repping every frikkin place on your skkkeptic site. If the paranormal is so laughable that we can all fag out together & get a chuckle on the web, why have we been talking about encounters with the beyond for FOREVER? I'm not out for blud. I just love the truth ( & piercing self-righteousness). Let's be pals, Rich. I'll send you x-mas cards? Oh, and Feorag: Lck ths dck w yr tng NUKKAZ!!

You probably don't get me: Christianity = wicca = Scientology = flying saucers = Islam = Magick = Buddhism = Homeopathy = psychic powers = Hinduism = &etc. Yes, many of your comments are sloppy, sometimes sexist or insulting. But even if you were a gifted apologist for [insert superstition here] I wouldn't much care. If I were interested in 'hiding' from you I could simply block you or bitch to pacbell.net. If you have so much to share why don't you start your own weblog where you use your real name and provide a valid email address? I had a mad fling with progressive house/trance of which Transeau is the best known exponent. I could've been listening to the Four Seasons, Ellington, Velvet Underground, or Anita O'Day - so what. Why don't you start your own weblog where you can post your views and opinions instead of focusing on a skeptic's weblog? Actually I thought you would have little more to say. My own guess is that the world will exist in some entropic state forever. Since immaterial conditions don't exist they've never been here so they won't be there. Too lazy? Have nothing to say that doesn't involve going "left hand" or "nukkas?"

You like "trance" music but you don't believe in "trance" states of consciousness? Weak in the kneez! How does music fit into a materialist view of the universe, anyway? Who's listening, Rich? How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about You talkin censorship like it's no thang?. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
