An atheist's Thanksgiving

Richard Evans Lee

Sometimes you hear the story of the atheist who for Thanksgiving said “I’ve finally gotten rid of the idea of God and I thank God for it.”

We’ll just have to be grateful for having gotten spurious faith out of our minds and hope one day that the rest of the human race catches up.

I, for one, am happy that we have colonized this fine land. For every acre of sparsely populated woodland we have created productive farms as far as the eye can see. We have built roads that stretch from sea to sea, created properous cities. We have created the richest finest land in the entire world and we did with the sweat of our brows and labor of our people. Our ancestors lived in squalid conditions, suffered disease, hunger, warfare all to forge a new land where free thought and fair rewards for hard work existed. It is time to celebrate the harvest - a time to look with guarded pride at the fruits of our labour and thank our ancestors and the spirit of free will and community have brought us this far. Always it is important to remember that our privilege rests on the shoulders of those that came before us, our forebearers who turned the soil for the first time, the natives who passed along their knowledge of agriculture, the seafaring adventurers who risked their lives to travel the expanse of ocean in wooden sailing ships, in search of a better life. Let us make sure that we are always deserving of, and never forget the path to this fortunate life.

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about An atheist's Thanksgiving. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
