Captain MeLinda Morton

Religious Intolerance

The Air Force chaplain who went public with the evangelical Christian treatment of non-Christian cadets has been removed from her post.

Another victory for born-again bigotry.

"They fired me," said Captain MeLinda Morton, a Lutheran minister who was removed as executive officer of the chaplain unit May 4. "They said I should be angry about these outside groups who reported on the strident evangelicalism at the academy. The problem is, I agreed with those reports."

Miss/Mr.? Morton, Some sincere advice - I was distracted from your message on Hardball by your appearance. I couldn't decide if you were a man with a woman’s name or a woman who was trying to be a man :-( I am a gay man and decided which ever of the above is true you are surely gay. Wouldn't be better if you became one or the other - it would not be so disturbing and distracting from what you have to say. Tom
This woman is a rare jewel, she cares about the constitution. She is unafraid to speak the truth and to name names. She's too good for the military...they want parrots. Same is true of our other leaders all the way to the white house. The truth is spoken by few and few want to hear it.
The message by Pentecostals is damaging to the great commission " to Baptise all nations" ... It is frustrating for missionaries who are doing disater and hunger relief work in poor nations to have Evangelicals come along , telling people that infant baptism is wrong, and Catholics , Lutherans , Anglicans, and other main stream faiths are doomed to hell . The Samaritan's Purse and the Focus on The Family groups are glad to take donations from us, and then knife us in the back in the field. The concept of being "born again" can be simple acceptance ( my opinion ) ... Shame on them and good for Pastor Morton.
It is about time Christians had the courage to speak up about their faith. I'm so tired of liberals like Rev. Morton crying because we get the right to exercise our constitutional right like everyone else. Homosexuals, pro-abortionists, evolutionists and everyone else can force their beliefs and culture on us, but we are castigated if we speak openly about our beliefs. Those professors didn't lose their rights when they took their posts. Why should they be silenced when everyone else is free to speak? Granted, they should be sensitive to the feelings of others and have respect for different beliefs. But they should not be treated like pedophiles because the believe the Bible and chose to live it in their lives. Sign me "Sick of the leftist bigotry"
No one will dispute that religious slurs and outright "religious" rudeness is absolutely inappropriate. Christ Himself was extremely critical of "religious" hypocrites in His day and the Scriptures, as you well know Chaplain Morton, echo this sentiment. Religious slurs are what insecure and angry people speak. Genuine Believers show the love of Christ, which is irresistible, not offensive. Surely a CHAPLAIN grumbling about Christians following the command of Christ by sharing their faith is equally as inappropriate. Chaplain Morton, your actions beg the question: What did you join the Chaplain Corps to accomplish? Was it squelching the Word or promoting the God you serve? Is it just me or is it the height of ironies to read that a Protestant chaplain filed a complaint against fellow Christians for encouraging cadets to attend chapel and read their Bibles? Another complaint reported in the media was against people telling cadets that they will go to hell if they don't believe in Christ. Forgive me, Chaplain Morton, but that message comes straight from the Author of Christianity, the Creator Himself. You would know that before anyone else, one would think, Chaplain. Yet another whine was about praying before sporting and other events at the academy, including praying before a final exam, and also that posters promoting the Mel Gibson movie "The Passion of Christ" were put up in the cafeteria. Oh, the horror! Again, pushy tactics and rudeness on anyone's part, self-professed evangelical or pagan, are still just rudeness and have no place at the Academy or in society at large. On the other hand, following the edict of Christ Himself to tell others of God's salvation through His Son is the main theme of the entire Bible. As a Nation whose laws are based on the Ten Commandments and whose founders claimed to be God fearing men, shouldn't we be glad when Believers and the message of God's forgiveness prevail in any institution? I will quote Chaplain (Lt. Col.) Steven Nicolai, 71st Flying Training Wing, writing on the mission of the Air Force Chaplain Corps: "Our vocational calling sets us apart from all other Air Force functional areas. We are called to reflect God’s love and care, for the people we serve. We are to be a reminder of the Holy and shine the light of God upon you, his people, through prayer and worship, rites and rituals and through the witness of our own faith and lives. Our commission is to tell you about God and to invite you into his presence." Now this man of God knows what his purpose in the Air Force really is. Maybe Chaplain Morton and Chaplain Nicolai should be pen pals. Chaplain Morton, check out the official currency of the U. S. since the late 1800s. Clearly marked on every coin and bill are the words, "In God We Trust." It's my understanding that one of the Founding Fathers, Patrick Henry, said in 1776, "It cannot be emphasized too strongly or too often that this great Nation was founded not by religionists, but by Christians; not on religions, but on the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For that reason alone, people of other faiths have been afforded freedom of worship here." The fact remains that this is a Christian-based country and promoting Christ in a respectful manner should be encouraged at the Academy and elsewhere in our land. Disrespect and insolence are contrary to true Christianity and common decency and should be, of course, treated like a weed and pulled. Christ would do and did the same. In response to the previous post: I submit that genuine Truth seekers, Ms. Delores Jones, find it in the person of Christ, who is Truth. The right to tell others about Him is one that I have served six presidents protecting. Of course, Ms. Jones, you have read the Constitution yourself, like the First Amendment regarding "...prohibiting the free exercise..." of one's religion. That should be at the fore of any discussion of what's happening at the Air Force Academy.
I saw the TV program concerning M Morton's conflict with the Air Force. It did not bring up the fact that 'chaplain' Morton was fired from her position- rather it said that she was offered another job concerned with helping to clear up the problem of religious influence at the Academy. She refused that position and resigned instead. According to the documentary, Morton's beef with the Air Force was not one specifically of Evangelical influence, but of Christian influence itself. I was shocked to hear a supposed Christian Minister attack the very doctrine that she was supposed to represent. My gut reaction is that we need to know more about Melinda Morton- that she is not only a bad minister, but a wolf in sheep's clothing and is acting to tear down Christian values and not support the US Constitution as she purports. How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Captain MeLinda Morton. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
