A company's birthday could hold the key to its financial fortunes, according to a numerologist based in Sydney, Australia.
Dr Neil Hair is offering an alternative explanation for the spate of financial scandals which have hit WorldCom, Enron and other big businesses over the past two years.

The answer, he claims, lies in the humble zero.

"The double zeros in 2001 and 2002 represent hidden files and skeletons coming out of the closet," explains Dr Hair, a softly spoken Scot with a PhD in structural chemistry who took up numerology 20 years ago.

"The twos represent the people in charge.

"They're supposed to act for the good of their shareholders and employees. But if the energy's negative they may act as crooks."

Numerology takes a huge leap of faith.

Draw a circle. Divide it into four with a cross. Mark it like a compass N, E, W and S. The four poles are governance (N), competition (E), utility (S) and concern (W). The four fields are science (NE), technology (SE), the arts (SW) and the humanities (NW). It is the plan of all human endeavour. Evolution selected out a job sharing deal for the sexes. Males were given the function of dealing with the N and E, females the S and W. Thus, the circle is divided from NW to SE, with males to the NE half and females to the SW half. At the level of "self" we are all somewhere on this circle, a mixture of all the properties. If you make the circle an annual calendar, with midwinter at N and midsummer at S, the two principles meet at the SW (Mayday) and separate at the NW (Halloween), the old pagan calendar behind our modern celebrations. If you examine sexuality, we are all mixtures of the two principles, male at the NE, female at the SW, mixed in the SE and neither in the NW. If your sexuality is focussed on the same sex, you are homo, if on the opposite sex, you are hetero. Thus you can have all the mixtures in homo or hetero flavours. The same circle is used by mystics to describe the influences across society and time. Hence the change from masculine in the past 1000 years to feminine. It really means that society, having fed well in the male hunting stage, is now entering a female stage to digest it all. All civilisations eventually turn "female" - Marx's dream.
