Bob Jones IV takes power

Christian Fundamentalism , • Miseducation

Stephen Jones really, son of lovable old BJ III.

"He's more attuned with what is the mind-set — and understanding the mind-set — of the younger generation," school spokesman Jonathan Pait said.

But getting young people to conform to the university's rules — including a hand-holding ban — won't change, he said.

Holding hands! Oh my, yes, touch someone's hands and the next thing you'll be singing Why Don't We Do It in the Road - and probably even doing it. That old devil Satan is such a subtle tempter.

Don't accidentally mistake this as Christianity...unless you can find any Scriptural substance in the Bible. (You won't, I've read it.) Sure, I can say that I'm an African American, even though my skin is white. So, if I do something bad, will you say that African Americans are bad people? That would be ridiculous. The same goes for this story. This isn't following a Christian tradition, instead, it's following a personal tradition of someone in a position of leadership at the university. To call this Christianity would be akin to calling me Martin Luther...and meaning it.
You don’t think Bob Jones University is Christian. Fair enough I’m sure the folks there would say that you aren’t a Christian.
BJU does not pretend that it's rules are Bibilical mandates. The school views itself as a boot-camp: it is a place where you knowingly deprive yourself to learn discipline and morality. Certainly holding hands is harmless, but one thing you don't find at BJU is the vast moral depravity found at most other colleges/universities. The school provides a liberal arts education set against the context of conservative or "fundamentalist" Christianity. They do this very well (several graduates, past & current, have attended ivy league schools and hold prominate places in government). You don't have to agree with it's positions, but don't knock the school unless you truly understand it. Once in a while, people might respect it's attempts to train morally upright young people as opposed to speaking viciously about it...entirely from ignorance.
I went to the "bootcamp" and to say that there is not the "vast moral depravity" of other schools is pretty relative. I was witness to a ton of sexuality and other moral sins. Rules cannot stop sin... as a matter of fact it makes it that much more fun! Bob Jones University is a school that no one technically "has" to attend, but for many fundementalist parents (like mine) it is (was) the only school they will allow or pay for, their kids to attend. So there are many, many students there that are very wild and worldly and learn while attending how to be very sneaky!

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Bob Jones IV takes power. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
