Pope Benedict XVI has had strong anti-gay feelings for decades. He's been more of a homophobe than many other Roman Catholic prelates.
As always when I find myself confronted by the words and feelings of someone who thinks my primary sexuality is akin to a contagion that needs to be contained I can't help but wonder if he is striving to avoid something he sees within himself.
For decades, while moderate clerics defended celibate gay priests, Ratzinger pressed for a purge of homosexuality not merely as an act or a lifestyle but as an orientation. Now he's in charge, and he's got ambitions beyond the church. He wants to cleanse us all, inside and out.
