Happily Gay Atheist No Longer

Homophobia , • Richard Evans Lee

In an effort to forestall unwanted, pointless comments my weblogs comments forms all began:

I’m a happily gay atheist

I went on to say that homophobic and racist comments were apt to be deleted.

Foolish me. This led to no end of comments about my being a godless queer. A few were well meant but that didn’t make them a whit less wearisome.

Some wrote to call me a hypocrite, ignoring that I asked that people who share my prejudice not abuse the believers that left comments.

Others accused me of denying them free speech. Aside from being unable to distinguish between a hobby site like this and a place protected by the First Amendment they were the folks who dashed off angry letters when Janet Jackson’s pastie appeared momentarily before the American’s public’s collective eye.

Naturally their parting witticism was that I would surely delete their comment. I rarely did. None came back to note their error.

My websites are use the same templates. On Computer Toaster there was the plaintive cry by a Apple Computer fan on an entry where I noted that I’d be sticking with Windows who wanted to know what sex had to do with the Macintosh? (Beats me.)

Dealing with comments across the sties sometimes consumes considerable time. So I’ve eliminated the reference to my affectional preference and atheism.

Don’t worry I’m still a cheerful fag and nonbeliever.

Understand why you have decided to remove this description of yourself. I'll admit to a feeling of regret, though - I liked the honesty of your clearly-stated position.
I thought about keeping it on a selective per weblog basis: on some of my sites (I have ten or twelve) it really isn't relevant. They use nearly identical templates. There's just enough difference for it to become increasingly hard to manage. And I really would rather have people comment on the entries, not me personally (except on Pansexual Sodomite). I did add "Anti-theism, skepticism, laughing at quackery & fraud" at the top of every page on this weblog to make my point of view clear. Not that you can ever trust people to understand what they are reading. Some of the people who leave comments think they are writing to Penn and Teller or the girl who plays Lana Lang on Smallville.
