The last Shakers

Hodgepodge

NEW GLOUCESTER, Maine — It's a tall order keeping a big family farm going when you grow your own vegetables, raise your own livestock and care for 18 buildings, some as old as the nation itself. It's even tougher when there are just the four of you overseeing 1,800 acres and no descendants to take over when you're gone. That's the situation for the world's remaining Shakers, members of a dying religious sect that flourished in the 1800s.

Village of Shakers has dwindled to just four

Comments

I don't get it. There's only four of you and you're trying to reestablish a religion where you can't have children. Well if you can't reproduce then you can't pass the religion down from parent to child, that's how religions flourish. Didn't you relize that when there's only four of you and also you're not converting people because in this day of age just about nobody will give up their leisures. If you offended, i don't care.

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about The last Shakers. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
