Dr. Gene Scott redux

Cults , • Hodgepodge

Ah, Dr. Gene Scott, America's oddest semi-Christian cult leader. I know many think him a true Christian (which, of course, wouldn't make me esteem him a jot more). But cult followers and those whose lives have been bruised by charismatic maniacs are an unhappy species in any nation and any time.

Jill writes in My Beef with "Doc:"

At the beginning of this school year, there was mention of my roommate buying a satellite dish, which she would use to watch Doc's 24/7 satellite broadcasts. I, not pleased at the prospect, reminded my roommate that, in fact, four people live in our apartment, and she should meet with and discuss this with us, because it would obviously affect us all, being in the living room of our very small domicile. I was astonished, however, when she told me that she would do what she pleased, and how we felt about it didn't matter at all, because getting this satellite and being able to watch the broadcast at any time of the day (which they already did on their computers) was more important than any of us (in essence).

Jill writes in Dr. Gene Scott, Background:

If you tune into any of his satellite, cable TV, internet, or shortwave radio broadcasts, you're fairly likely to hear him abusing his congregation, and it's very probably because they're not sending enough of their money to him.

I've varyingly been given to thinking Doctor Scott a cunning fraud and a egomaniac with a messiah complex. No reason for me to care.
