Buddhists against the pledge

Asian , • Hodgepodge

Michael Newdow has some unexpected bedfellows:

The Pledge of Allegiance ``is filling children's heads up with the idea there is a god,' said Thomas Phelan, a teacher with A Few Simsapa Leaves Buddhist Center in Walla Walla. The center has around a dozen regular members and meets every Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Phelan's living room at 122 Winnebago St.

Phelan notes the words, ``under God,' were not added to the Pledge until 1954.

Buddhist children should not have to choose between being unpatriotic by not citing the Pledge, or citing a Pledge that violates their faith, he said. As a veteran, he said he feels the same way - wanting to say the Pledge, but unable to.

Comments

I was interested Buddhism before I became atheist. This is what attracted me.
It is even said that Francis Bellamy (who wrote the original pledge in 1892), would not have wanted 'under God' in his pledge. They added those words 23 years after his death, he wasn't there to speak out against that change.
Its "not being under God" why many buddhist chose to run away from communist regime and seek save haven in a place like america where their lives and rights are protected "Under God".

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Buddhists against the pledge. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
