Christian long distance telephone company

Faith is Profitable

When God said thou shalt not fib I guess there was a secret escape clause for born-again telemarketers. Or a more generic exception made for anything that brings in the filthy lucre.

United American Technologies, a "Christian-based phone carrier" based in Oklahoma, has a pretty good sales pitch. According to a story by John Avlon in today's New York Sun, the company describes itself as "the only carrier that is taking an active stand against same sex marriages and hardcore child pornography." Here, we pick up a taped telemarketing call after one potential customer asks if AT&T sponsors child pornography:

But you'll have to go to Wonkette's site to read the sales spiel: Reach Out and Touch Someone (But Not in a Gay Way)

Comments

After hearing those telemarketing calls linked on Wonkette's site, it was clear that this company is promoting incredible ignorance, intolerance and homophobia. So I decided to transform myself into a "Southern Baptist Redneck" character and give them a call. Listen to the results: Call one: http://www.darat.org/~dimossi/Redneck.Bible.Man_Homo.Call.Blocker.mp3 Call two: http://www.darat.org/~dimossi/Redneck.Bible.Man_God.Puke.mp3
Plenty of cash – not to mention votes – in ignorance, intolerance and homophobia.
In listening to the calls, I gained respect for the phone company. The very humerous caller had me rolling on the floor. The caller was trying to make the agent agree to radical things, but the agent kept his cool and suggested the caller pray just a little bit more (consult the Comforter, or the Holy Spirit) and let God teach him. I respected that because the agent was not trying to argue or force his opinions even though they were more conservative than the caller's. I believe the company does not hate homosexuals, but fears for children and society when the more militant branch of the homosexuals tries to educate people that their way is best. Everyone thinks their way is best or they wouldn't be doing it, and many people want to influence youth. SOme Christians don't want their youth influenced by what is seen as opposing values. You have to respect them for that, or you cannot condone the homosexuals for doing the same thing. Everyone wants their own values taught. Christians have the Bible and long tradition behind them. Although in my opinion if Christians really understood and lived their talk, they would be a lot more respected and there would be a lot more of them.

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Christian long distance telephone company. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
