Could the Intelligent Designer be a Sadist?

Evolutionary Theory

Even if the universe has a conscious implementer there's no sign that it loves what it has created. Maybe the designer created a torture show for it's amusement.

Proponents of ID claim that complex systems found in nature—the cell, the bacterial flagellum, the immune system—are evidence of "intelligent activity" by a designer. But what kind of intelligence? Is the designer brutal or loving, jealous or forgiving? Look at the ancient crocodile-like predator we just dug up. Its mouth is a perfect killing machine. Does the same intelligence that designed us design our murderers?

Is the intelligent designer loving or vindictive?

Comments

Hey there, Richard. New to the site, first time posting here... I think it's tough to look at an animal and it's drive to kill, or it's "design" as a perfect killer, and tie that in any way to the idea that an intelligent designer is malicious or evil or responsible for people who commit murder. I might soon be torn to shreds for the disagreement, but I tend to think that such specific purpose, even if it is for an animal to kill another, shows that there IS a designer, whether cruel or not. As for the issue at hand, if He is a God of wrath or a God of love, the conclusion I come to, looking at how specific the purpose of so many animals and plants, noting the ridiculous complexity of life and the incredible odds involved when determining the origins of life- (Biochemist and skeptic Francis Crick, who shared a Nobel Prize for discovering the molecular structure of DNA, said "An honest man, armed with all the knowledge available to us now, could only state that in some sense, the origin of life appears at the moment to be almost a miracle, so many are the conditions which would have had to have been satisfied to get it going."), is that we were created with loving purpose. The fact that we live and exist to debate this, to me, proves a loving creator. I know that just pissed alot of people off, but if the intelligent designer, if He really existed, were truly evil, couldn't life be so much more cruel for humans? Surely such an intelligent being could make us much more miserable, and in turn, have much more... "fun"? "sadistic pleasure"? I know this is a wholly existential argument, using only things I've seen and things I've tried to reason, and using the perpetual "what could have been" to support my conclusion, but I think the question is existential as much as scientific when you bring in the ideas of cruelty and love. Cruelty and love are not ideas that science can prove. That's it- just sharing my thoughts on the idea. I know that I'll probably be written off without thought by posting the link to my blog, my Christian ideals thrust into the open, but whatever.
