"What surprises me," Staley said, "is the number of hate calls I've received."

Christian Fundamentalism

Allan Turner in the Houston Chronicle:

The voice on the telephone exploded with anger. "You've got enemies!" the caller barked at Kay Staley before launching into a scorching diatribe about atheism and the Houston real estate agent's unmitigated gall in suing the county to remove a religious monument from the grounds of the civil courthouse. ...

Within days, Staley received more than 50 hostile phone and e-mail messages. At midweek, dozens of protesters led by Grace Baptist minister Aubrey Vaughan flocked to the site to decry what they consider secular society's assault on the nation's religious heritage.

"If atheists are offended by the Bible," Vaughan said later, "they need to find themselves an atheist nation."

Battle lines are clear, but the law isn't

I am not an atheist! With that said, this country seems to have a lot of problems recognizing the division of church and state. I see the meauring stick as "if it is funded in any part by taxpayer dollars, religion should not be part or party to it". Muslims, buddhists, jews, wiccans, atheists, agnostics etal. pay taxes as well. Why should they see their hard earned dollars being used to fund christian causes, groups, propaganda etc. (and before anyone says shit about it, it is always a christian group that tries to foist it's belief structure on others). Even my private property rights are at issue. Anymore, I'm scared to sick the dog on the Jehovah's witnesses that knock on my door every weekend.
So go ahead and seperate church and state. But do it completely, and bring me my mail on Sundays! Please read the following: Since we can't pray to God, can't Trust in God and cannot Post His Commandments in Government buildings, I don't believe the Government and it's employees should participate in the Easter and Christmas celebrations which honor the God that our Government is eliminating from so many facets of American life. I'd like my mail delivered on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter. After all, it's just another day. I'd like the US Supreme Court to be in session on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter as well as Sundays. After all, it's just another day. I'd like the Senate and the House of Representatives not have to worry about getting home for the "Christmas Break." After all it's just another day. I'm thinking that a lot of my taxpayer dollars could be saved if all government offices & services were productively working on Christmas, Good Friday & Easter instead of getting paid holidays to sit at home. It shouldn't cost any overtime since those would be just like any other day of the week to a government that is trying to be "politically correct." In fact.... I think that our government should work on Sundays (initially set aside for worshiping God....) because, after all, our government says that it should be just another day. Separate church and state. Please do... but do it completely so people can quite worrying about offending others.
next thing you know people are going to be kicking boy scouts out of city parks.
In a country that permits you to be an atheist, why can't you leave Christians alone? You get to have your pornography on display everywhere, so we can't have a Bible?

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about "What surprises me," Staley said, "is the number of hate calls I've received.". Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
