U.S.: The Roots Of Christian Fundamentalism

Christian Fundamentalism

Prague, 19 February 2003 (RFE/RL) — There’s a joke that has been circulating for many years among members of the Christian fundamentalist religious movement. A fundamentalist minister ends a long debate with a religious opponent by saying: “Very well. I will uphold your right to worship God in your way, if you will uphold my right to worship God in God’s way.”

To the most fervent of Christian fundamentalists, it may not be a joke

I was perusing the link between superstion and fundementalism. That is, the unthinking acceptance of doctrine from an individual or group. I came across your ah...interesting little blog here. While you say that your not interested in hateful (though you don't define what that means) comments you seem to relish negative commentary by your obvious enemies the Christian Fundies. Oh well, if your thinly disquised hatred of them makes you feel better and gives you someone to take your frustrations out on, have fun. It might be healthier to deal with the roots of your anger though instead of finding a convenient (and slow moving) target like fundies.
The lack of a valid email address and the last two sentences make it seem unlikely that it'd be worth my while to attempt a response.
Having just read some articles on US sites referring to christian and muslim fundamentalism it appears that the central issue - fundamentalism - is the same irrespective of it's root. The Phenomenon seems linked with an attavistic and willfull primitivism of thought process. By referring to these poisonous ancient texts - bible/torah and koran, fundamentalists discard the enlightenment and philosophy of two thousand years. preferring to think like tribesmen from the middle east in an arrid landscape with an equally arrid thought process. The isolationism of the poorly educated US whites and those of desert tribesmen is very similar in that they fear other cultures and wish to impose on others their narrow and pessimistic views of the human condition. As a european it looks like the American constitution - written by european settlers sick of the sectarianism and tribal warfare of europe doing their level best to avoid these pitfalls - has never been so threatened.
