Theater owners afraid of offending fundamentalists

Christian Fundamentalism

In the American South a movie mentioning DNA and evolutionary theory won't be shown for fear of angering creationists and fundamentalists.

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (AP) -- IMAX theaters in several Southern cities have decided not to show a film on volcanoes out of concern that its references to evolution might offend those with fundamental religious beliefs.

IMAX theaters reject film over evolution

The IMAX production called Volcanoes of the Deep Sea makes a connection between microbes found in undersea volcanoes and human DNA.

So when did the "head in the sand" ideology become ok? If someone makes a good case for an idea and shows it to someone else, or, in this case, makes an IMAX movie about it, how is keeping it from people helping anyone? Didn't prohibition teach these folks anything? Denying access to something means, in most cases, it's a good thing. Religion is an odd odd thing...
Why is it that so many people are afraid of offending the religious population? These people swear that our country was founded on the religious ideas of the christian bible. If that is so then why do so many of them fear one of the corner stones of this great nation, the freedom of speech? If a movie, tv show, or radio program is offensive to you, then turn it off or don't go. That's called freedom of choice. I guess they miss the good old days of burning people at the stake for not agreeing with them. Now that was a time of free speech. Can't we all just remember that anytime someone questioned the church it ended up being a good thing. If no one did that the world would still be flat and the sun would revolve around the earth. To these theater owners all I can say is aren't these locations normaly in centers of learning, and if so when did anyone ever learn anything under the "forgiving" hand of censership?

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Theater owners afraid of offending fundamentalists. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
