Rev. Bobby Welch
• Christian Fundamentalism
The idea of a million new Southern Baptists is depressing isn't it? I myself was washed in the blood of the lamb and the baptismal pool (the latter being far more hygienic). I was quite serious about it at the time and my example led my own Daddy to 'get right with god.' If you've read these pages for any length of time you see where my conversion back at the Bible Baptist Church of Savannah, GA led.
Though they lack numbers and ideological allies here, the Southern Baptists came to New England on Wednesday and Thursday as part of a barnstorming 25-day, 50-state bus tour that [Bobby] Welch began last Sunday in Florida. His goal: baptizing 1 million people a year around the country.
Not a single misconception. Southern Baptists are very judgmental and often proudly anti-intellectual.
Among the misconceptions, he said, was that the denomination was judgmental and anti-intellectual. In fact, the church wanted to serve people of any background and help them know God, he said.
Most people are confused. I'm often confused about one thing or another myself. The average moron would rather fill their mind with … Well it is hard to call them certainties since you know they usually don't have any idea what it is they think they believe. They just want to be comforted. By anybody.
Jenn Muller, the woman Welch met in Newton, said she was surprised by how easily she spoke with Welch. Before she knew it, they were praying together about her nursing career.
She might've proven equally amenable to a Buddhist or a Raelian.
Welch may yet dunk a million unbaptized Wal-Mart shoppers. Doesn't mean most of them will behave a bit differently.
Not to dismiss the menace of the fundagelicals.
