Pat Robertson: nutty charlatan?
• Christian Fundamentalism
I could say plenty of things about the man who has become America's nuttiest TV Christian. But I'm an atheist so I'll keep my mouth shut.
The truth is that Robertson is a wicked, bitter, nutty man who has made a career of saying things so profoundly outrageous he should be shunned by all but hardcore zealots. Instead, he's simply indulged, like a loony uncle in our national attic.
It's disgusting. We glow with white-hot righteous fury when we denounce, say, some of the dreadful Islamic imams who call for death to Americans. But when Robertson, hiding behind an avuncular smile and a head of white hair, calls for state-sponsored murder, we just shrug.
Pat Robertson, Christian disgrace
Pat Robertson is a charlatan. He has made a career of slinging about the most absurd claims, posing as someone with not only uncanny knowledge of all things but also an unobstructed line to the Almighty. Robertson has all the answers to everything, as only a charlatan can.
Hucksters have always been part of the American landscape, colorful characters we’ve tolerated, figuring if they can make a living off their pitch, more power to them. However, we’ve never given them credit for knowing or influencing much beyond the tawdry environs of their sideshows and snake-oil wagons.
