Houston courthouse bible

Christian Fundamentalism

Allan Turner in the Houston Chronicle:

In May, Harris County Judge Robert Eckels rebuffed a call from the American Civil Liberties Union to remove the Bible from the granite monument, which has stood at the front door of the civil courthouse, at 301 Fannin, almost half a century. ...

After 1988, that tradition gave way to contention. Members of American Gay Atheists urged Commissioners Court to remove the monument, which occasionally was vandalized. At least twice, the Bible was stolen. The Star of Hope steered clear of the controversy, devoting its resources to caring for the homeless.
