Family Reports Church to the Police

Christian Fundamentalism

Last year I noted all sorts of holy Halloween hijinks by American Christians. I haven't had the time to pursue it this here. But here's the story of a family that knows how to cope with church pests: call the police.

House of Prayer Church of Bloomington Indiana left a flyer on one family's porch warning them that celebrating Halloween is working for Satan. The family wasn't at all amused. Evidently the flyer was somewhat threatening. You know how subtle the fundagelicals can be.

The Gully family filed a complaint with the Ellettsville Police Department. The incident also prompted the family to install an alarm system at the home, the station reported.

"This is my home, and I like Halloween. If I want to decorate my home, I have every right to decorate my home," Gully said.

Comments

The fundies have a right to express their offensive opinions. I am one of those who believe that freedom of speech means allowing speech that I personally despise. Having said that, to the degree to which the flyer is actually threatening, the family is certainly justified in contacting the police. The family has the right to decorate their home and should be able to feel safe in doing so. Christians have the right to spread absurd bullshit, however, they do not have the right to threaten others with bodily harm or property destruction.
I’d never suggest limiting anyone’s right to expression. Wouldn’t surprise me that a family that was wholly unfamiliar with fundamentalist rhetoric about Hell, damnations, demons and the light might find a flyer telling them they were working for Satan and would be undergoing eternal punishment if they didn’t mend their ways unnerving. In a sense frightening the family would be the goal: frightening them into salvation. Whenever some earnest looking born-again bozo starts to walk in my yard I just order him off the property.
