Christian Fundamentalism

Stephen John Jordi was arrested for planning to bomb abortion clinics. A member of the most crazed class of Christian fundamentalist, he was kicked out of Bible school for violence and arrested for child abuse.

There was no mistaking Stephen John Jordi's religious fervor. He has fire-and-brimstone tattoos on both forearms and gave his four children -- including a daughter born last weekend -- the names Trinity, Charity, Elijah and Noah. ...

Once, he was attending a class on ''witnessing'' when one of his sons started crying. Jordi took the child outside and started hitting him across the face, according to a man who called police on his cellphone to report the incident.

The Nov. 7 fax from the First Baptist Church at Hillsboro was sent four days before the FBI arrested the 35-year-old father of four in a high-profile bust in South Beach. He was charged with planning a firebombing campaign targeting abortion clinics, doctors who terminate pregnancies, gays and some churches that refused to take a tough stance against abortion.

The church pastor wasn't the only person sufficiently alarmed by Jordi's talk of violence to report the matter to authorities. Jordi's brother Michael of Bridgeport, Ala., apparently contacted the FBI.
