Faith doesn't make you good

Christian Fundamentalism

In contemporary America, however, it seems forever necessary to repeat the elementary admonition that there is a distinction between religion and morality. At the Christian demonstration outside the Supreme Court that morning, one of the speakers remarked, as she reminded her listeners that "the Soviet Union was definitely not a nation under God," that "I guess it's not a surprise that if you don't acknowledge God you don't care about lying." Are there no religious liars? Not if you hold that religion and morality are the same; or if you deem a statement to be true because it includes a mention of God. This same silly woman went on to suggest that in the inner city "children are killing children because they have not heard 'Thou Shalt Not Kill.'" ...

Hey, I'm an atheist, and I care about lying. I care very much, which is why I don't appreciate that kind of slander from fundamentalists of unknown moral character. Personal integrity is the cornerstone of my ethical beliefs. Damn, but I'm tired of this kind of nonsense.
As a democratic, agnostic, patriotic American, it scares me that the religious right has its own fingerpuppet AND that the country is allowing its agenda to propagate at the alarming rate it is. The entire "good vs. evil" bout that is on now is the eqivalent of a declaration of righteousness; and the separation of church and state (a fundamental AMERICAN ethos) is being threatened by this same agenda. Morality: the quality of being in accord with standards of right or good conduct Religion: a. belief in and reverence for a supernatural power or powers reguarded as creator and governor of the universe b. a personal or institutionalized system grounded in such belief and worship as defined @ dictionary.com
It seems to me that if you get your moral code from an external source, like a Bible, Dr. Phil, or your dog (as in the case of David Berkowitz), then you actually have no moral code of your own and cannot even recognize when you are lying. I can't remember the last time I heard a "Bible believer" say something like, "I take responsibility for my behavior. I apologize and will make amends." For them marriages end because of gays, not adultery and divorce. It's porn. It's Satan. It's secular society, evolution, anything and everything but them.

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Faith doesn't make you good. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
