Satan's football team

Cheap Laughs

Bud Kennedy of the Star-Telegram writes about the fight over a Oklahoma football team's mascot.

Ending 12 years of ungodly bickering, school trustees voted 4-1 on Sept. 2 not to change Dibble's 53-year-old mascot. Some parents had called the school's cartoon devil emblem an insult to Christianity.

In an ironic twist on the current Alabama rampage, some critics also called the Dibble Demon unconstitutional.

If a judge can't legally promote the Ten Commandments, they said, then a school district should not be allowed to promote a goofy blue devil.

Never mind that there is no evidence whatsoever of anyone renouncing his or her faith to worship the Dibble Demons -- at least, no more than folks in any little Oklahoma town normally worship a Class B 8-man high school football team. ...

Yet some critics even blame Dibble's achievement test scores on the Demon, counselor Linda McKinney said.

"We are absolutely not worshipping the devil up here at the high school," she said, laughing.

"I don't think we are practicing satanism or that we in any way require an exorcism," she said. "But there are folks here in town who believe we do."

Devil is in the debate in small town

To whom it may concern iam a Grad of dibble and 12 years ago the same thing also happend and to the end it was never change you dont hear about ringling causing a big fit over changing the bluedevils or even another town south of rushsprings who also name is demons so the people in that town need to get a grip and face reality because there sons or there daughters did or are even going to school there now and if they try to change the name all the students will just laugh at them and wake up the next day and demons will always be dibble.
Since when does a mascot define who you are!! I personally am a graduate of Rush Springs. Our mascot is the redskin but that doesn't mean everyone in our small community is running around with red skin. Or how about the Marlow Outlaws now I'm sure there are a couple of outlaws in Marlow but not the whole place. I think that it's their choice what their mascot is. None of the students or teachers seem to have a problem with it and just because a Demon is your mascot doesn't mean your satanic. As I said unless it's summertime and the temperatures up you don't see red skinned people running around here. So why don't we try to take care of some of the other problems in the world rather than worring about some stupid mascot.

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Satan's football team. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
