Archbishop Alfred Hughes clearly has no idea why people go to New Orleans.

The archbishop said that the exploitation of sexual activity, "both heterosexual and homosexual," produces "tawdriness" that harms the public atmosphere. He added that "our city's image is hurt around the country," because of events that "glorify and exploit sexual excess."

But, for the past two years Southern Decadence has been tamer than in the past. Last year following an outcry from an evangelical minister tough indecency laws were passed banning public nudity.

Religious organizations routinely campaign against the festival. Last year, a conservative Christian group paraded through the Quarter alongside the revelers, carrying signs and chanting anti-gay slogans. A heavier-than-usual police presence kept conflict to a minimum.
