Popetown!

Blasphemy is fun

Weak-kneed BBC!

A childish pope and a gaggle of greedy cunning Roman Catholic prelates sounds like the Italian Renaissance. I hope an American cable channel feels brave enough to show Popetown or that we at least get it on DVD.

Leading figures within the Church are dismayed that the BBC is to sell Popetown, featuring an infantile Pope and a group of back-stabbing cardinals, to broadcasters overseas just days after it caved in to pressure not to broadcast the programme in Britain.

Catholics call on the BBC to scrap plans to sell controversial 'Pope' cartoon abroad

I think the whole thing is a farce. Personally, I am Catholic and I cannot see the purpose of this ban. A strong belief allows the ability to be teased about it. Catholics are not persecuted in England and have not been for over a hundred years. There is no case to be made for oppression here. It is utterly ridiculous to be so hyper-sensitive. My aunt is a nun and she is perfectly able to discuss her religion and cope with dissent, because she *truly* believes in God and no amount of teasing can affect her belief in Him and her religion. I suggest the whiny 'Disgusted of Tunbridge Wells' have a little more faith in the omnipotence of God. Either he is or he isn't, you know? You can't belittle the Holy Father. He's the Pope. Just chill out, my fellow Catholics. Additionally, they have a point. It's not like the Vatican is known for its freedom from corruption. I mean, the Borgias? Or, more recently the child abuse scandals. Come on.
Can't wait to see it here in Clean Green Ballsy NZ :-) Its scheduled to screen a few weeks from now. YAY!
As a faithful Catholic I feel it is my duty to do all I can to defend the faith and Our Holy Mother Church when I see her under attack. I cannot believe that there are Catholics out there who actually think this kind of thing is harmless. This programme completely belittles our beautiful faith and the structures around it, such as the Pope and the Cardinals. Not only that, the show blurs the lines between reality and fiction, so that people who know little or nothing about the Church are likely to be mislead. For me it is more the lack of respect that this show has for the Catholics Church that upsets me as well also the element of persecution - if the programme was called Muslimtown, do you seriously think they would be showing it? I love our Church and our Holy Father and it hurts me as a member of the Body of Christ, to see it disparaged in such a way. If you still don't agree and think i should just chill out ask yourself how you would feel if this programme and these kind of jokes were made about you and those you love? Would you be happy to sit back and let your family be publically deriled and humiliated? Or would you protest and want the programme not to be aired? The Church is our family and the Pope is our Holy Father, so it is our very place and responsibility to stand up to this kind of attack. As Catholics we are called to defend our faith and while this is not the kind of persecution that the Church has suffered in the past that still doesn't stop it being persecution - just of a more modern nature.
Being a person who loves to take the piss out of all things i find ridiculous, religion being one of them, i eagerly awaited popetown screening in new zealand. i was incredibly disappointed. the show was so boring i didnt even watch the whole thing. i've laughed more watching those early morning religous programs on sundays. what is the big deal about this show? no one i know actually laughed when they watched it. its crap like this that gives piss taking non-believers like myself a bad name. for shame.
I am an RC but I am also someone who has lived out in the real world and in the world that I call my bubble also knows as my school FUS. The more I'm on the outside I gain a deeper understanding on the worlds twisted nature and such articles as this prove that point. Very few other religions can be persecuted without several organizations jumping to there add, but if it is the Catholic faith, which is being treated as such, then it is fully supported. The BBC made the right choice to not air this work but it made an error in selling it. This work shouldn't of every gotten off of the story board much less going into production but in the world of today nothing surprises me.
I am waiting for the BBC to release a show titled "Hymie Town" that honors our Jewish friends. They can follow up with "Nigger Town" to describe the antics of Black folks. Don't hold your breath. Marc
If it wasn't for its controversial nature, this series would be seen just as a quirky cartoon. As for how it treats the Catholic Church, frankly with the CC's long history of persecuting so-called heretics and being directly or indirectly responsible for the death of a number of their saints, I don’t feel too sorry for it at all.
Hi, I believe a cartoon like this is GREAT. All religion does in todays day and age is promote conflict with the other religions, other than - I guess help people get through their 'hard' lives that they can't get through without some crazy thought that unless they live their life the way their religion 'says' it's not gona all 'be fine'. I mean think about it, If there were no religions might we all get along a little bit easier rather than yelling and cursing 'no my gods the real god' at eachother?? All those catholic priests are bloody paedophiles anyway, hahaha I hope to god theres an episode of a pope fiddling with a kid, i mean not that i'd like to see that for personal sexual reasons, but to show the world what religion really does to people and to really cross the line of political correctness. I mean if you're gona cross it, why not fully get to the other side. Sorry to all those people who might have been unfortunate enough to have this horrible act done to them, but the truth must be told! Also whats with religious zealots having no sex?? Come on god intended for us to participate in this wonderful act, why do you think he'd contradict himself and then tell you not too?? Also why was the Catholic church so threatened by 'science' back in the vatican times?? Because your preachers and popes knew they were lying or preaching something they didn't know was true for themselves. Anyway if anyone can somehow get this to the producers of popetown can you please ask them to do an episode of a pope fiddling with a kid, unless they already have because i haven't been able to watch it in nz, been busy but hear it's great. Anyway keep up the good work and god bless:P

How do you feel?

Feel free to share your feelings about Popetown!. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
My thanks,
Richard
