'Light' female genital mutilation

Absurd Inurbane Witless

Dr Omar Abdul Kadir, a gynaecologist who has been working in Florence for several years, claims that his operation satisfies the traditional demands for the operation from many African mothers, yet "causes neither pain nor damage". But the proposal, and its acceptance by the local health authority, has outraged Italians campaigning against female genital mutilation (FGM). Cristiana Scoppa, who works for Aidos, a Rome-based non-governmental organisation working in Third World countries on women's development, said that the operation would break Italian law.

Fury as Italians back female mutilation

Comments

hey dude, this website is helping me do a school project! thanks!
I find it hard to call any type of mutilation "light." Six thousand women a day undergo the torture that is female genital mutilation. It really is not painless or harmless, as this doctor claims. This practice causes harm both psychologically and physically, like chronic pelvic infections, keloids, vulval abscesses, sterility, incontinence, depression, anxiety and even psychosis, sexual dysfunction and marital disharmony, and obstetric complications with risk to both the infant or fetus and the mother. Though it is better that this doctor is performing the operation under sterile conditions, it is wrong for any operation to be performed when there is no medical reason for it. Why remove something that functions perfectly properly? The practice causes harm for the sake of tradition. It is not so that women need to be "put into their place."
