Lovecraft probably heard of Crowley. But I doubt that Crowley ever heard of the mostly unknown horror writer who wrote for Weird Tales. There's no connection: Lovecraft was a materialist and skeptic. He didn't believe in magic, he was just writing stories.

Yo YrdDg: Why you came here to find out about Crowley boggles my mind. Hit Google, sukka, and find the rill. In a nutshell, he was a major force in the reinvigoration of Western mysticism following the tremendous double-dose of intolerance from the established church and empire-ical science. He traveled all over, found some yoga, found some magick, then founded the OTO (a mystical society modeled on freemasons but based in meditative practice instead of ritual). His most favorite phrase: "Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the law." This came to be the main tenet of whatcha might call Satanism. The point is that when all organisms act in complete self-interest, all forms of evil will end. Why? Because when we peer deeply into our own self-interest (rather than deny desire) we perceive that the happiness we seek can only come when all others are happy as well. Therefore it is self-serving to serve others. The awareness of Crowley is that we share a universal body/mind/spirit. It is a beautiful awareness. So did he know Lovecraft? I've heard yes, I've heard no. Rich is pro'ly right that Lovecraft knew of him. BUT I'll say this: the Necronomicon I've got on the shelf now was published by the OTO. Did the mad Arab write it? nope. Did Crowley write it? nope. Who did? wish to Christ I knew 'cuz it's strong as sh*t and should come with a more explicit instruction manual. I'll say this, too: Lovecraft talks all the time about Cthulu - a specific manifestation of the race of beings called Yog Sotthoth. In his Chaos Magick rituals, Crowley calls upon an ancient Babylonian god for assistance: Iak Sokkok. Yog Sotthoth? Iak Sokkok? Let's just say these dudes were pullin from the same pipe. Lefthandpathinthehousesay: YEAH! Oh, P-shizzle to yrd dg: I don't think Rich would kick a X-tian out of his site, just be ready to take a dude to task when he talks crazy about yr beliefs. Trust me, a skkkeptic like him is ready to rumble.

GITCHA!!!!!!!!! I'll tell ya where the NECRONOMICON comes from. SOMEONES IMAGINATION that's where. I forget the authors name but it was just a poxy invention for a fictional novel, then all of a sudden loads of people became sheep and decided to pretend it was real and as we can see, people still believe it. Oh well.
