Bishops won't encourage Bible reading

American Roman Catholic bishops possibly fearing creating another Martin Luther have decided to not encourage their flock to actually read the Bible.

The Catholic Church has long emphasized that individual reading of Scripture is always subject to interpretation by the church, in contrast to Protestants, who believe individuals can understand Scripture on their own.

Milwaukee Auxiliary Bishop Richard J. Sklba, who favored the proposal, worried that Catholics were getting too "individualistic" in their Bible studies.

I have always wondered why humans subject themsleves to other humans. If I'm going to read the bible I will make up my own mind rather than defer to some priest and his room temperature and tradition bound ideas.

Feel free to share your feelings about Bishops won't encourage Bible reading. Please stick to the theme of the entry. Disagreement is fine. Homophobia, racism, and kindred expressions of hatred will be deleted. This site is one of my hobbies. I genuinely enjoy hearing from people and hate moderating or killing comments. Forthright disagreement is fine as long as it is civil.
